Bamenda: NW Fons, Civil Society, Warn Against Violence

A CPDM Central Committee team is in the region preaching the preservation of peace after the announcement of presidential election results today.

Disorder and violence are ugly and undesirable. This is the summary of the message taken to the people of the North West Region ahead of the announcement of results of the October 9 presidential election today. Carrying the message is a delegation from the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM Central Committee who went preaching peace to members of the North West civil society, traditional rulers or Fons and the media on Wednesday October 19 in Bamenda. After delivering the message, the people made commitments to avoid disorder after the declaration of the election results.

It was against this backdrop that Fons of the region dissociated themselves from any action that could turn the region into an experimental ground for disorder. In a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting with the CPDM Central Committee team, the Fons said they were not party to any group of people, political or otherwise, whose intention is to disrupt peace. They committed to stand by the results of the elections proclaimed by the Supreme Court in lieu of the Constitutional Council.

Prominent amongst the signatories were Fon Aneng Francis, President of the North West Fons Union, Fon Angwafor III of Mankon, Fon Chafah IX of Bangolan, Fon Forbuzie of Chomba, Fon Sintieh II of Oku, the Fon of Nkambe, amongst others. Another communiqué of the Coordination of North West Civil Society Organizations signed by Nkwenti Simon, Tatah Donald and Rev. Mih Clement, appealed for political actors to give love for fatherland a chance to enable them take meaningful political decisions that guarantee social justice, peace, stability and national unity.

They appealed to the people to show restraint and uphold the virtue of peace and remain non-violent in the exercise of their rights, privileges, duties and obligations. The CPDM team with the Hon. Simon Achidi Achu at the helm also took time off, to appeal to journalists to rise to expectation by being professional, responsible and shinning apostles of peace through their reports. The team included Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, Minister Nji Paul Atanga, CPDM Political Bureau member, Regina Mundi, Fon Angwafor and Hon. Nji Fidelis.

In a related development, El hadj Lawan Bako, UDP National Chairman and spokesman of the presidential majority, has urged Cameroonians to respect Republican values of peace in the face of threats by some political party leaders to jeopardize social peace after the proclamation of results of the October 9 presidential election today. The call is contained in a release of an emergency meeting of the UDP Political Bureau in Bamenda on October 19, 2011.
