Despite calls for civil disobedience by some political parties, all was calm in the South West Region.
The entire South West Region is calm. The calm atmosphere has been reigning before and after declaration of the 9th October presidential election results on Friday 21st October. The serenity before the declaration of election results was due to the fact that majority of inhabitants of South West Region were either indoors or in bars, watching or listening to results on television or radio.
This explains why the streets of some towns of the region like Limbe, Buea and Kumba, were deserted, although some people attributed it to the fear of the unknown. Most people from the six divisions of the region contacted by phone hold that the release of results before hand had dampened tensions since some people were already aware of the outcome. As such, there was little or no anxiety.
After the announcement of the results, there was general calm because according to some people, the results followed a normal trend generally accepted by Cameroonians who believe in peace and in their beer. “I soaked myself in beer and had a sound sleep, forgetting about the results,” said a Buea resident. With such an attitude, most people went about their daily activities. Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM militants, though happy after the outcome of the election, manifested their joy with show of fingers of victory; but being cautious not to provoke opponents.
