Fru Ndi: « SDF Takes Cognizance of Proclamation of Results »

Ni John Fru Ndi, Chairman and candidate of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) reacts to the proclamation of the October 9 presidential election results.

Why has the SDF come out with a position statement for the October 9, 2011 presidential election in Cameroon?

I had to come out to Cameroonians to express and explain what is happening. The SDF takes cognizance of the proclamation of results by the Constitutional Council in favour of the incumbent. I took note of the Supreme Court’s activities. The way they judged the cases and proclaimed Paul Biya victor. I did not take note of Paul Biya’s victory. I called on the Supreme Court to take note that I was going to demonstrate and demonstrations are my civic rights as a citizen to demonstrate when I am not happy.

What makes you say the Yaounde declaration you made with some candidates in the October 9 presidential election was misinterpreted?

The Yaounde declaration made by some candidates in the October 9 presidential election was misinterpreted. The message in the declaration was that we want Cameroonians to defend their victory, democracy and justice by peaceful demonstrations. We did not call on Cameroonians to go out on violence. The declaration called for a peaceful demonstration for us to air our grievances. People panicked and said SDF was coming with war, insurrection and violence. Let us look back a little bid. Cameroonians resisted registration and it is not a political party that called on them to resist. They did that on their own because they knew that the electoral process in the country was not free, fair and transparent. The SDF had to step in to beg people to go and register.

As an opposition party leader in Cameroon, what would you propose as the way forward for our democracy?

The way forward is that the election should be cancelled. The election was not well conducted.

Candidates come together to make the Yaounde declaration. It is an indication of a future coalition?

The future will tell.
