Tour of Faso: Tega Martinien Emerges Runner-up

He came close to winning the race, arriving barely 25 seconds after the first.

Cameroon may not have succeeded to beat Burkina Faso in their own backyard but however left the competition with their heads high in the sky. Tega Martinien of SNH Velo Club which represented Cameroon at the competition emerged runner-up, barely 25 seconds behind the race winner, Zibweiba B. Hamidou from Burkina Faso. Cameroon went into the race with an undeclared ambition to topple Burkina Faso who won the last edition of the Tour of Cameroon and came close to achieving this objective, had it not been due to the malevolence and temerity of the Burkinabe cyclists. Tega Martinien none the less equated the exploit of Sadrack Teguimaha who came second in 2005.

It was an equally impressive performance from the other cyclists from Cameroon at the 25th edition of the race. Tekou Damien came 10th while Guewa Clovis, Yves Ngue Ngog and Mba Herve Raoul, came 17th, 20th and 24th respectively. The Cameroonian delegation is expected today in the country and will certainly be treated to a heroic welcome by Cameroonian. The performance of the Cameroon cyclists depicts progress in the level of cycling in the country ever since an expatriate coach was hired to manage the affairs of the national cycling team.

The race was run between October 21 and 30. It comprised 10 laps over a distance of 1513 kilometres with the participation of professional European cyclists and some African amateurs from Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Mali, Gabon and Cameroon. Senegal and Sierra Leon desisted at the very last minute.
