Registration for the General Certificate of Education, GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations will henceforth be computerised. The process has already begun in schools in the country. At the English High School at Obili, Yaounde yesterday November 21, teachers, parents and students were busy compiling documents for registration.
The process begins with the payment of registration fees. Registration fee for O Level is FCFA 8,000 and FCFA 9,000 for A Level. This is different from the fee students pay for the number of subjects registered. For O Level, students pay FCFA 1,000 per subject while the amount for A Level is FCFA 2,000 per subject. Also, students pay for digital passport size photographs worth FCFA 1,000 and FCFA 500 for authorised receipts. Generally, the least number of subjects to register in the O Level is four while the highest is 11. For the A Level, the least number of subjects is two while the highest is five.
The Bursar of the English High School, Hannah Tebo, said when the students pay the registration fee, they are given booklets in which they fill information. The teachers then enter the information into the computer. According to Hannah Tebo, the computerised registration reduces the level of paper work. “It is a good process that has been introduced rather suddenly,” said Hannah. She added that computerised registration is good, but in schools where officials are not computer literate or there are no computers, there will be problems with registration. Similarly, schools in villages with regular power outages and no standby generators will also have problems with registration.
This notwithstanding, registration for the 2011 GCE examinations is going on in the country without any major hitches. The deadline for the payment of registration fees is December 15.
