The Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission had discussions with Prime Minister, Philemon Yang on tuesday, November 22.

The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, says Cameroon has been very active in promoting the mission, vision and strategic planning of the African Union. Jean Ping spoke to the press in Yaounde, November 22, 2011 after meeting with the Prime Minister, Philemon Yang. He said Cameroon has fulfilled all its commitments with regard to the African Union, adding that many African institutions are based in Cameroon such as the African Monetary Fund.

The African Union Commission Chairman was in the country at the head of the organisation’s delegation to take part in the burial of AU Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Elisabeth Tankeu. The 67-year old Elisabeth Tankeu, who died while serving her second term, was buried in Bangoua, Nde Division of the West Region on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Jean Ping used the meeting to laud the performance of late Elisabeth Tankeu and commend the government of Cameroon and the Head of State for contributing to the cost of her medical treatment and burial. The AU Commission Chairman used the audience to restate his congratulations to the government on the successful holding of the October 9, 2011 presidential election.

Prime Minister Yang and Jean Ping also used the audience to discuss the situation in Africa. “We have faced so many crises this year with Libya, the Arab revolution, Cote d’Ivoire and famine in the Horn of Africa,” Jean Ping said. He reiterated his obligation to brief African Union member States on the situation. He said the AU has the duty to promote the preservation of peace and democracy in Cote D’Ivoire.
