Club Presidents Criticise Management of Professional League

Meeting in Douala over the weekend they called for frugality and transparency in the management of the league finances.

Hardly has the Professional League in Cameroon gone operational, than has it began receiving criticisms from the very people who constitute it. The association of first division club president met in a general assembly in Douala to express their disapproval about the way the affairs of the league are being managed. They accuse the pioneer executive of being a spend thrift as FCFA 25 million of the FCFA 50 million that was given by Fecafoot as subvention, was spent on hiring a study firm to come up with an organisational chart for the league and recruitment of administrative staff for the league. Also, the club presidents accused the president of the League, General Pierre Semengue of paying out fabulous sums of money as allowances to members of his executive. According to the president of the association of presidents of first division clubs, Faustin Domkeu, the club presidents will like to see a greater frugality and transparency in the management of the finances of the league; he refuted allegations that the club presidents were planning to boycott the resumption of the championship.

Meanwhile the league is plagued with difficulties to kick start the new football season as subventions promised the league are yet to be given. So far the Professional League has received only a meagre sum of FCFA 50 million from the FCFA 250 million that was promised by Fecafoot. Reliable sources say the federation is ready to disburse the remaining FCFA 75 million to complete the first instalment of the subvention which will still be insufficient to cover the running cost of the league. The bulk of their finances is to come from, the official sponsor of the championship, MTN, who promised given a subvention of FCFA 600 million. However, officials of the Professional League will only be able to receive the money in January. Same as the about the FCFA 300 million subvention from the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, destined for the payment of salaries of players which can only be disbursed when the new budget goes operational in January. It is for this reason that the club president contemplated boycotting the beginning of the resumption of the MTN elite One and Elite Two championships.

However, the greatest hurdle to the resumption of the championship is the holding of the Cup of Cameroon football final, which closes the sports season. Though the beginning of the championship had been scheduled for the December 3, as it was thought the cup of Cameroon was to take place before this date, the championship cannot resume as the cup final failed to take place and no one can say for certain, when it is going to be played. The suspense hence drags on.
