For those who were out on the night of St Sylvester in Yaounde, they must have noticed a change in security measures. The affluence of police operatives in major road junctions and hot spot was significant while the number of police vans was also noteworthy. The up and down movement of the police vans filled with police operatives was telling of another level of security measures put in place by the Delegate General for National Security, DGSN, Martin Mbarga Nguele in a bid to secure the town and usher city dwellers into a new year, void of assaults.

“The number of security men we see in uniform is little compared to those in civilian wear, placed in strategic areas like markets, bus stops, bars….,” a source at DGSN Yaounde, told Cameroon Tribune. The source added that some are in taxi and have all been urged to be vigilant, smart to act and above all, hospital to victims. The police-public partnership, the source hinted can better succeed if the latter is comprehensive and collaborative. Besides 117, the public has been urged to be vigilant and remain calm in case of assault, but without taking note of any trace that can help the police crackdown on the culprit. The need for traffic flow has also been their preoccupation as traffic flow police have been deployed to all corners of own to make sure that circulation remains fluid during their period.

He explained that the measure that went into force few weeks into the feast of Nativity aimed at giving an enabling environment for Cameroonians to feast without fear of insecurity. The move, he said will run through the whole of 2012. The measure to reinforce security in the country, our source said, involves all the different corps of the police and has been put to application by all the regional delegations for national security as instructed by the boss.
