Foning Equates Good Health to Cleanliness

She was speaking during the ceremony of the cleanest quarter in Douala V.

The Mayor of Douala V, François Foining has handed over cash prices to some heads of some quarters which were judged to have been the cleanest quarters in Douala V. The first prize went to Jourdain quarter which received the sum of FCFA 500,000, the second was Gentile City, and received FCFA 300,000 and the third prize was FCFA 250,000.

Addressing the people present, Foining said Cleanliness is equal to good health. She said once people live in a clean environment they will avoid certain disease and will live in good health. She added that the reason for this competition of the most cleaned quarter is to prompt the people to work hard and eventually keep the whole of Douala V very clean. She said out of 58 quarters only 27 participated. She said the method in carrying out the competition was to check out how household waste is handled, how the inhabitants try to fight against floods, the cleaning of gutters. And the committee in charge of the exam had to do inspections twice a week for the one month period for which the programme was launched. According to Foining the cleanest had to be the one which has made more efforts than the others. She added that what is important is not what they receive as prizes but the fact that the inhabitants struggle to handle the filth around them. She also said in the programme for next year the Council will provide equipment which will enable the inhabitants to do the cleaning. And also cause them to be aware of the slogan of all last Saturdays of every month is t keep clean in Douala V. Foining lauded Hygiene and Sanitation Company, HYSACAM and the petrol company TRADEX for their partnership in seeing this programme go successfully. Working tools were shared to all other quarters like will barrows, spades, diggers, supplied by HYSACAM

The Divisional officer of Douala V, Jeannot Tamadjou, said they have come to join hands with the council to exhort the inhabitants to learn to clean their surroundings for their own good and to improve on their living standards and not wait on the government to do that for them. He said the Jourdain quarter which came first has always been making efforts in all aspects as well as the Gentile quarter which came second.
