Yaounde: Fake Magistrate in Police Dragnet

Ibrahim Dairou, 40, was using the identity and function of a magistrate in Yaounde.

Ibrahim Dairou alias “Procureur de la République” (PR), meaning State Counsel, who has been using the identity and function of a magistrate, Dairou Abasse, at the Court of First Instance of the Yaounde Administrative Centre, will now be judged or face the real State Counsel Dairou Abasse, after being caught in dubious dealings using the identity of the magistrate.

For more than one year, Ibrahim Dairou was collecting money from people with legal problems claiming to be magistrate Dairou Abasse who could easily handle their problems with ease at little cost. Most of his victims were women with legal problems or those looking for job opportunities at the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) in Yaounde.  Ibrahim, a married man with five children, left his family in his village in the North and relocated to the Capital City to better carryout his job of crookery. While in Yaounde, Ibrahim was staying with a girlfriend who was fully convinced he was a State Counsel. At times, it was even the girlfriend who brought him clients knowing he had the professional position to handle their problems.

Sources from the General Delegation of National Security say everyday, Ibrahim, looking well dressed like a State counsel will leave his home for the premises of the Yaounde Court of First Instance. There, he spent his time talking with those who had come with various legal problems, giving them the impression he was Magistrate Dairou Abasse and could actually help in resolving their problems. Each time Ibrahim had a rendez-vous with any of his “clients”, he will rent a gorgeous car. The car was his office. Whenever he arrived at a meeting point, his driver will rush to open him the door and thereafter, he will tell his client he is in a hurry, so he/she should step into the car so that they could discuss briefly. This is how Ibrahim will collect FCFA 30,000 and more from his clients, claiming he is working on their files.

Last week, he had a “legal business” with a woman who was abusively sacked by her employer. After collecting over FCFA 50,000 from the lady, he disappeared into thin air. The lady decided to go to the court to check what was happening. At the court, she was directed to Magistrate Dairou Abasse, somebody she could not remember having met for a legal matter. This is how Ibrahim’s business was uncovered. Investigation carried out by the Yaounde Central Police Station led to the arrest of Ibrahim Dairou at the Manguier neighbourhood last week.  He is currently under police custody waiting judgment at the same court he went duping people.
