The 1.8 km road now under construction by the National Petroleum Products Storage Company, SCDP, will be completed in 10 months.
The rising road traffic congestion observed on major streets in the city of Yaounde has become a source of worry for not only government and municipal authorities, but also for the private sector. Several projects undertaken recently to create secondary roads, however, have not eased the pressure as the number of cars keeps increasing. Moreso, some neigbourhoods, though close, still lack interconnecting roads to make movements easier, shorter and cheaper.
As a complementary initiative to government’s efforts to improve on the city’s road network, the National Petroleum Products Storage Company, SCDP, is constructing a two-lane 1.8 km stretch of tarred road between its depot in the Nsam neighbourhood and the Brasseries du Cameroon brewery in the Mvan neighbourhood. Started on December 13, 2011, the FCFA 1.7 billion road project will create another one-way entrance for fuel tank trucks coming to get fuel at the depot. But most importantly, the road will provide an interconnection between the Nsam and Mvan neighbourhoods. “We will spend less time and fuel going from Nsam to Mvan using this road when it goes operational.. This is a laudable initiative,” said Onana G, a cab driver cruising past the SCDP depot on Tuesday 17th January 2012.
According to the worksite supervisor of the project, Jean Rémy Tual , the construction work will involve tarring the road and equipping it with gutters, culverts, public lighting and green spaces. “The only challenge we might face is the high water table along the Mfoundi River, but we will finish on time,” he told Cameroon Tribune on the construction site, yesterday.
When completed, the new road will link up the road built along the new Mfoundi River canal thus, enabling vehicles to go as far as the city centre unperturbed by traffic.
