Yaounde: Bus Stop Hosts Sugar Cane Business

Vendors also sell palm wine and fruits to crowds of clients on seats reserved for bus passengers.

Along some major streets in the city of Yaounde, bus stops have been constructed by the City Council to shelter passengers from sun and rain as they wait for urban transport buses. However, some of these bus stops have been transformed into shelters for homeless people and business places.

A bus stop that catches the attention of every keen observer is one situated just next to the Brasseries du Cameroon brewery along the old Airport Road in the Mvan neighbourhood. In the early hours of the morning, wholesalers of sugar cane arrive with several bundles of fresh sugar cane grown some 25 km from Yaounde on the highway to the town of Mbalmayo. Sold at prices ranging from FCFA 800 to FCFA 1,500 depending on the sizes of the bundles, these “juicy” sugar canes are bought by mobile sugar cane vendors seen in most parts of the city.

The brisk sugar cane business is accompanied by other fruits as pawpaw. In the evenings, crowds of palm wine lovers throng the bus stop for fresh palm wine from nearby bushes. As these businesses grow gradually, the bus stop no longer hosts bus clients who prefer to stand along the road to wait for buses.
