MTN Elite One: Visitors Carry the Day in Yaounde

Njalla Quan and Astres beat Renaissance and Canon respectively on an identical 2-0 score.

The beginning of the Elite One championship has been good for teams visiting Yaounde. In the first of the two matches played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde counting for the first day of play, visiting Njalla Quan Sports Academy thrashed Renaissance of Ngoumou with a goal on each half of the encounter. Njalla Quan was more enterprising in the match with Metuge Franklin obtaining the curtain raiser just ten minutes into play. While, fans expected Renaissance to react by mounting pressure to obtain the equalizer, it was instead Njalla Quan who took the upper hand of the game with good ball circulation and orchestrating assaults on the Renaissance goal post. The effort paid as substitute Joseph Foe turned out to be the last action hero, scoring the second goal in the last touch of the ball in the encounter.

The Canon-Astres encounter also ended on an identical 2-0 score in favour of the Brazilians from Douala. The result does not reflect the physiognomy of the encounter as both sides were seemingly of equal strength. It took a spot kick for Astres to open scores through Agbor Kevin. The second goal was also from a spot kick as substitute Mangolo Aime deflected in a corner kick at the 84th minute to seal a comfortable victory.

Meanwhile, there have been several innovations in the organization of the championship this year. In an effort to attract the public to the stadiums, the Cameroon Dance Federation and Letis Diva performed during the half time and a tombola was made from the coupons of entry tickets and prizes offered to winners. In what is considered as a blot of escutcheon on the Professional League, some children were caught selling fake entry tickets purportedly given to them by their parents who work for the league. The attendance was somehow impressive and the Njalla Quan band and fan club travelled all the way from the South West to cheer their darling team.
