Yaounde: Multifaceted Craft Works on Display

Eye-catching artistic, production and service handicrafts products inundate SIARC village.

Since yesterday January 24 when the doors of the courtyard of the Yaounde City Council officially opened for the third edition of Cameroon’s International Handicrafts Exhibition (SIARC 2012), visitors are being served with appealing craft works both for their eyes and houses for those who would want to take home others for posterity. The over 360 craftsmen selected from across the country alongside their peers from within and without Africa are present with the best of crafts work, seeking international recognition to widen their clientele.

From the beautiful textile, sculpture and decorative works from the Northern Regions, wood, agro-food processing products of the Littoral to the innovative wood carvings, dress designing, pottery, jewellery, weaving and dyeing works of the West, North West and South West Regions, SIARC is a veritable crafts village, representative of Cameroon’s rich cultural diversity.

The products are attractive, their exhibitors receptive, and ready to take you round their craftsmanship (how the products were made and the advantages they offer). The products lend credence to the slogan of SIARC 2012-Maturity of Cameroon’s Craftsmanship and ties  with the theme of the third edition, “Cameroon’s Handicrafts: Quality Products in Search of International Market Niches”.  While each region has a regional stand which is representative of what its craftsmen are showcasing, organisers have also segmented the stands according to categories of craft works so as to ensure better visibility and marketability of the products.
