MTN Elite One: Day Two Matches This Weekend

Seven matches will take place in stadiums around the national territory.

The MTN Elite Two championship enters the second day of play this week end with seven matches scheduled to take place. On the look out will be to find out whether teams that recorded victories on the first day of play will continue with their winning spree. Special focus will be on the defending champions, Coton Sport of Garoua when they play host to Renaissance at the Roumdé Adja stadium in Garoua. The colossus from the North started off timidly with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Sable of Batie on the first day of play and will therefore by seeking to make amends for the poor performance. Renaissance on their part lost their first match 0-2 to newly promoted Njalla Quan Sports Academy and will be out to prove that the defeat was just and error as the club has vowed to be among the top three of the championship this year, synonymous to qualification for continental competitions next year.

Canon of Yaounde who were humbled 0-2 by Astres on the first day of play at their own backyard in Mfandena-Yaounde, will be travelling to challenge newcomer, New Star. The defeat against Astres didn’t go down well with the fans of the mythical club from Nkolndongo-Yaounde who have written a letter to the council of wise men asking for the dismissal of the coach as they claim Canon has no strategy or play style that can take them far in the championship. They accuse the president of the board of directors, Celine Eko, of using the club image for their personal enrichment and called for accountability in the management of the finances of the club.

While keeping an eye on the usual contenders for the league title such as Coton, Union, Astres and Canon, it would be interesting to monitor the performances of newly promoted clubs to the elite one championship such as Njalla Quan, New Star, formerly known as Chantier Naval and Scorpion of Bé.

Meanwhile club presidents still await the disbursement of subsidies promised them by the official sponsor of the championship. According to the press officer for the Professional League, Martial Ebode, the money has been signed out already and it is only a matter of time for the bank procedures to be completed and the money made available to clubs expressing the wish that this takes place before the second day of play which the clubs are threatening to boycott if the money is not paid.
