AFCON: Angola Seeks Quarter Final Berth

Côte d’Ivoire is qualified while Angola needs a draw to secure a place in the second round.

While the third day of play will be one of prestige for the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire as they are already qualified for the second round of the tournament, the Palancas Negras of Angola consider it as the last hurdle to overcome to reach the knock out stage. Côte d’Ivoire currently tops B with six points after having edged Sudan 1-0 in their opening encounter and beating Burkina Faso 2-0 in their second outing in the competition. No matter the outcome of the encounter against Angola, the Elephants will sail through to the quarter finals given that the second of the group, Angola have four points and the third barely one point. The tussle will be about the leadership of the group as Côte d’Ivoire would want to conserve their unbeaten record in the tournament and stretch their winning spree. Victory therefore for Côte d’Ivoire will be like the icing on the cake.

Angola on the other hand, needs at least a draw to avoid any unpleasant surprises in case of a victory of Sudan against Burkina Faso. In case of defeat for Angola and victory for Sudan, both teams will be tied at four points and the difference will be decided by goal advantage.  The die is cast for Burkina Faso who have turned out to be the point distributors of the group with two defeats in two outings and not even a victory on the last day of play of the group matches will be enough to salvage their stay in the competition. Burkina Faso lost to Côte d’Ivoire 0-1 in their first encounter and 1-2 to Angola to join Senegal as the second team to be butted out of the competition.
