Kegham Emmanuel Diom: 35 Years Into Craftsmanship

The nurse/wood carver has trained youngsters to take the relay in the crafts when he retires.  Kegham Emmanuel Diom is a nurse by profession and works with the Baptist Health Board. His skills in crafts work and love for the art can easily veil any other thing about him. The originality of his carved products comprising a rotating throne, carved bed with three cupboards, fanciful carved food flasks, chairs and cups, among others, are what make his stand at SIARC, a most visit place.

He is a nurse today thanks to carving and youngsters he has trained are living thanks to technology transfer from him. “It is through carving that I paid my fees in the nursing school. I have also trained so many young people to take the relay when I retire,” he told Cameroon Tribune at the SIARC village. “Nothing can stop me from carving. In fact, I enjoy it. Only death will separate me from the art,” he said.  He appreciates the improvement in the organisation of the ongoing third edition of SIARC. Exhibitors, he said, are better handled and the evaluation better than that of 2010. But some of their products like his carved bed, large table and other household utensils are yet to get the recognition capable of making them indispensable items in most households. He remains hopeful that the contacts created would make businesses better for him in the days ahead.
