War on Corruption: Cameroon Promised More Support

The Minister last Friday received four ambassadors in separate audiences.

The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in Charge of the Supreme State Audit Office, (Consupe), Henri Eyebe Ayissi, on Friday February 3, 2012 ended a series of consultations with national institutions and foreign partners with a resolve by partners to fully support government in the ongoing anti-corruption crusade.

“We work closely together. We are partners in the CHOC (Change Habits and Oppose Corruption) programme which is managed by the Prime Minister,” said the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Bharat Joshi. The British Diplomat congratulated government for steps towards the fight against the canker worm, adding that the publication of reports by Transparency International and the National Anti-Corruption Commission in 2011 alongside judicial proceedings is a clear indication that there is the real will to tackle corruption in Cameroon.

It emerged from discussions between Henri Eyebe Ayissi and Raul Mateus Paula, Ambassador of the European Union to Cameroon, that possible ways of cooperation and support from the European Union are afoot to leapfrog the fight. Mr Raul Mateus Paula was pleased with the platform already put in place with other actors to fight corruption. Though they do not have anything specific in line at the moment, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U S Embassy, Lisa Peterson representing the Ambassador, Robert P. Jackson, revealed that “We will continue to look for ways to provide assistance or work in partnership with the ministry.” The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cameroon, Xue Jinwei, said he has the conviction that they can work together to better manage and control State funds. “We prescribed democratisation and accountability in the management of State affairs,” he added.

In a press statement issued at the end of the consultation meetings, that ran from January 25 to February 3, 2012, the Minister acknowledged the full support and willingness of Cameroon’s national institutions and foreign partners to join government in the struggle to stamp out corruption in the country.
