ELECAM Embarks on Consultations

The decision of the Director General of Elections on recompilation modalities awaited.

Preparations are going on at the head office of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) ahead of the announced recompilation of the register of electors.

Reliable sources at the Communication Unit on February 13, 2012 disclosed that ELECAM officials were currently holding consultation sessions with internal and external electoral partners. The consultations concern the various types of recompilation of the register of electors, the cost and time each method would take. This phase of the work, the sources indicate, is necessary in order to present to government and other sponsors the different options for the best to be chosen to ensure that the recompilation process is effective in order to ensure transparent and credible upcoming council and legislative elections.

Elections Cameroon staff both at the head office and regional, divisional and council structures are mobilized for the new task, the sources stated. Brainstorming and reflections on the effective recompilation process continue at the head office, while officials of its branches are preparing the necessary material in readiness to implement the directives of the Director General of Elections whenever they are made public. The Director General of Elections, Mohaman Sani Tanimou in a release on Thursday, February 9, 2012 stopped all registration. The same release stated that the practical conditions guiding the recompilation of the register of electors will soon be published.

The Chairman of the Electoral Board of ELECAM, Fonkam Azu’u Samuel during an extraordinary board session in Yaounde on February7, 2012, announced that the institution had decided to do a recompilation of voters’ lists in lieu of the revision exercise that started on January 5, 2012. ELECAM is counting on the financial support of government as Fonkam Azu’u pointing out government determination in a press declaration said, “This commitment of the government has just led to the high directives of the Head of State to the government ordering it to make available to ELECAM the financial means for the recompilation of the voters’ lists in order to ensure a further improvement of the electoral process in our country.”
