Quest for Continental Glory Begins

Union and Unisport are involved in the Confederations Cup while Astres and Coton Sport are engaged in the Champions League.

The quest for club continental glory will begin this weekend with preliminary matches of the African Champions League and Confederations Cup on schedule. The runners-up of last year’s championship, Union of Douala and the unfortunate finalist at the Cup of Cameroon, Unisport, will be involved in the preliminary round of the CAF Confederations Cup while Astres of Douala will be engaged in the preliminary round of the prestigious African Champions League. Coton Sports, who are equally involved in the African Champions League, will be exempted from the preliminary round of the competition, thanks to her past record.

According to the fixtures of the preliminary round of the 9th African Confederations Cup, Union of Douala will play host to Kallon football club from Sierra Leone whereas Unisport will be travelling to Cote d’Ivoire to challenge local side, Sewe Sport. In case of victory in the preliminary round, Union will face the Warri Wolves of Nigeria while Unisport will lock horns with yet another Nigerian club side, the Heartlands. Union and Unisport have what it takes to qualify for the round of 16 given that both clubs got up to a good start in the championship this year and are running neck to neck at the helm of the point tally sheet.

The lone Cameroonian club involved in the preliminary round of the 16th African champions League, Astres, will be travelling to the Central African Republic to challenge local side, DFC 9eme Arrondissement. In case of victory, they will face Elm Hilal of Sudan in the 16th finals. Meanwhile, Coton Sport of Garoua will be joining the competition in the round of 16 to face the winner of the clash between Sony de Ela Nguema of Equatorial Guinea and the Dolphins of Nigeria. The matches will be played on home and away basis with the first leg taking place this weekend and the second leg matches scheduled for the weekend between March 2nd and 4th.
