Yaounde: Rights Ambassador Lauds Electoral Reforms

Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe discussed with Prime Minister Philemon Yang on Friday.

The Permanent Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe has appreciated the Cameroon government for efforts in democracy, electoral improvements and human rights. She was speaking in Yaounde, Friday, February 17, 2012 after discussions with Prime Minister, Philemon Yang at the Star Building. She was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P. Jackson.

The meeting with the Prime Minister was the last phase of Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain’s working visit to Cameroon during which she had working sessions with Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) Electoral board members, the Ministers of Communication and External Relations and the Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms. “My general impressions are overwhelmingly positive”, she said after discussions with the Prime Minister. Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain admitted, “I know more work needs to be done,” and promised that, “I will certainly go back home to Washington and convey the message that Cameroon is an outstanding partner that has very much aligned values with the United States and encourage people in the US government to support the efforts of the Cameroon government.”

From the various working sessions, the US official said, “I heard the message from the people in government, those responsible for women’s empowerment, anti-corruption efforts and electoral reforms. No one has said that circumstances are perfect.” Government officials admitted the necessity for more efforts as, “Everyone says there must be more progress but I believe the sincerity of those responsible in the government that there is authentic work being done and I believe that progress is being made.” Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain explained.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is the leading inter-governmental body within the United Nations System that addresses human rights issues. It was established by the UN General Assembly by adopting a resolution (A/RES/60/251) on March 15, 2002 replacing the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
