Continental Competitions: Pass Mark for Cameroonian Clubs

They recorded two victories and one defeat.

Cameroonian clubs got up to a good start in continental competitions this year. In the first leg matches counting for the preliminary rounds of both the African Champions league and the Confederations Cup, two of the three clubs engaged at this level of the competitions, recorded victories and one lost. The best performance was recorded by current championship co-leader, Unisport who travelled to Cote d’Ivoire to beat Sewe Sport 1-0 in their own backyard at the Robert Champroux of Marcory stadium in Abidjan in the confederation cup. Union who shares the top seat of the championship with Unisport and equally involved in the preliminary round of the confederation cup, also recorded a victory. Playing at home against Kallon FC of Sierra Leone at the Reunification Stadium in Douala, the Nassaras Kamakai edged opponents, 1-0 thanks to a goal from their providential goal merchant, Joel Babanda.

The victories place both Union and Unisport in a good posture to qualify for the round of 16 while Astres of Douala, involved in the prestigious African championship League, jeopardized their chances of qualifying for the next round of the competition by falling 0-1in Bangui to local side 8e Arrondissement of the Central African Republic. The Brazilians of Douala will therefore have an uphill task to reverse the one goal deficit and score another goal without conceding any, to qualify for the round of 16. Meanwhile, Union and Unisport just need to conserve a clean sheet in the return leg matches in a fortnight, to sail through to the next round of the competition. Coton Sport, the flag bearers of Cameroonian football, was exempted from the preliminary round and will only be joining the competition in the round of 16 to face the winner of the clash between Sony de Ela Nguema of Equatorial Guinea and the Dolphins of Nigeria. One thing stands out clear, clubs doing well in the national championship are also doing well at the continental scene.
