MTN Elite One: Union-Unisport Tussle for Leadership

This will be during late day five matches of the championship today.

After the weekend break to honour their engagements in the African Confederations Cup, Union and Unisport will resume their tussle for leadership of the MTN Elite One championship during late day five matches today. Victorious in continental competitions on an identical 1-0 score, Union and Unisport will be taking on Sable and New Stars respectively with a view of clinching the three points which enable them conserve their leadership temporarily lost to Coton Sport. The Astres-Panther encounter has been further deferred to February 29 given that Astres will be returning from the Central African Republic tomorrow due to flight problems.

Meanwhile, in the early day five matches played over the weekend, Coton Sport walloped their fellow brothers from the North, Scorpion of Bé 2-0 to tentatively occupy the top seat on 11 points. Barely one point ahead of Unisport and Union on ten points each. Victory for Union and or Unisport will automatically dethrone the cotton weavers from the first position.

Another remarkable happening of the fifth day of play, is the first victory recorded by Canon in the championship this year. Canon beat Tiko United 2-1 to hop out of the relegation zone to occupy the 10th position. It was the first match under the new technical staff comprising Souleymanou Aboubakar and Louis Paul Mfede. It could therefore suggest that the change of coaches was a good decision. The new management team has to confirm with more victories or else it would be said it was just a stroke of luck.

Other interesting movements on the league table include the demise of Tiko United, who have been on a free fall ever since the beginning of the championship. The Samba Boys, who once flirted with the top brass of Cameroonian football, now languish in the relegation zone on the last but one position with only two points recorded. The new comers to the elite one championship continue faring well as they are situated above the relegation line.

In a related development, club presidents have already received subventions from the official sponsor, MTN. Elite Two clubs received FCFA11 million while MTN Elite One clubs received FCFA20 million. The money was disbursed on February 6th and only the subventions from the State are pending as FECAFOOT had earlier disbursed FCFA 125 million of the FCFA 250 earmarked for the Professional League.
