Donors Pledge More Support for CHOC II

Development partners have reaffirmed their support but insist on more government efforts.

Donors have reaffirmed their continuous support to government’s Change Habits, Oppose Corruption (CHOC) Project which is in its second phase. The determination was echoed yesterday February 21 in Yaounde at a meeting with the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in Charge of the Supreme State Audit Office, Henri Eyebe Ayissi and development partners.

However, donors insist on the need for government to transform its political will into action. From the representative of the Ambassador of the European Union to that of Germany and the Ambassador of America, the plea was the same; that of having concrete results of CHOC I and seeing into it that more government efforts are implemented at all levels. “The problem is not with financing, but following-up the project,” the European Union representative insisted, adding that they respectively have supported many projects in the country and will continue doing same for CHOC II.

The African Development Bank reaffirmed support and announced at least 100,000 USD support (approximately FCFA 50 million) while Germany said it will support the project with 60,000 Euros (approximately FCFA 40 million), this, for a period of nine months. The British High Commissioner to Cameroon, the representative of the French Ambassador, and the World Bank representative in Cameroon all praised government for the project and said they were willing to assist in the funding.

The Change Habits, Oppose Corruption (CHOC) Project created on February 23, 2007, has been instrumental in the fight against corruption in Cameroon. CHOC II was scheduled to begin in January 2012 and to last five years. The second phase of the programme will work for the effective implementation of the national anti-corruption strategy and also work closely with other actors and restructure anti-corruption units in ministries, the Chief Technical Specialist of the project, Mamy Raboanarijaona told Cameroon Tribune.
