Computers and accessories worth FCFA 28.9 million were yesterday offered to 19 councils.
The Centre Regional Unit of the National Community-driven Development Programme (PNDP) has donated computers and accessories to 19 councils in the region to improve on the efficiency and accelerate participatory development. The councils include among others, Yoko, Bokito, Makenene, Okola, Mbankomo, Nkoteng and Ayos. The computers were handed over to the Mayors of the respective councils yesterday February 23 in a ceremony at the Cercle Municipal Yaoundé chaired by the Governor of the Centre Region, Roger Moise Eyene Nlom.
The gifts evaluated at about FCFA 28.5 million comprised a complete HP 500B MT computer, an HP LaserJet printer and ink to each of the councils. Speaking during the ceremony, the Governor said as part of efforts to accelerate participatory development, government in 2004 embarked on the 12-year, three-phase PNDP programme. Modernising local administration, he said, was part of the programme and that the computers were to speed up and modernise the treatment of files. Like the Mayor of Nkoteng, Etienne Ngourang, his counterpart of Bikok, Mrs Mvondo was satisfied with the offers, stating that they will greatly modernise and speed up their work.
The Centre Regional Coordinator of PNDP, Ngoh Essoh David, also used the ceremony to present what the programme has achieved in the region and its perspectives. Since inception, Mr Ngoh Essoh said the programme has constructed 46 classrooms in the region, provided schools with 2,300 benches, offered 16,146 school textbooks as well as constructed three administrative blocks. “As at January 31, 2012, PNDP had also financed 254 micro projects in the Centre region,” he said. The Coordinator disclosed that over 238 micro projects have been earmarked for financing in the ongoing fiscal year to the tune of FCFA 1.585 billion.
