Civic Education: Pupils To Begin Human Rights Education

A two-day seminar to train national pedagogic inspectors started yesterday in Yaounde.

Human rights education will soon be introduced to pupils in all primary schools in the country. At the Ministry of Basic Education, preparations are underway to ensure that quality human rights lessons are taught.

The disclosure was made by the Inspector General of Education in the Ministry of Basic Education, Mispa Itoe, while opening a two-day workshop for basic education stakeholders in Yaounde yesterday February 23. She described the workshop as a “strong symbol” that illustrates government’s commitment to ensure the respect of human rights in society.

The workshop is to train national pedagogic inspectors and senior officials by providing them with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to supervise and follow up human rights education. “This project will further strengthen the partnership between MINEDUB and the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms,” she said.

Since 2006, the Ministry of Basic Education in collaboration with the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms developed various reforms in order to introduce the teaching of human rights in primary schools. As a result, two documents, ‘The Pedagogic Manual for the Teaching of Human Rights in Cameroon’ and ‘The Pedagogic Guide for the Teaching of Human Rights in Cameroon Primary Education’ were produced in 2006 and 2008 respectively. The seminar ends today.
