Illicit Financial Flows: Barrister Akere Muna Commissioned

He has become a member of a high-level panel to curb illicit financial flows from Africa.

Barrister Akere Muna, formerly, Cameroon Bar Association President and Vice Board President of the anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International, has been commissioned as a member of the High Level Panel (HLP) on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa; a body established by the United Nations Commission for Africa, UNECA in 2011.

The event that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on 18th February 2012 also saw the inauguration of the panel that is chaired by H.E. Thabo Mbeki, former President of South Africa. It is composed of nine other members both from within and outside the continent.

The establishment of the HLP follows a resolution of the 4th Annual Meeting of the ECA/AU Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in Africa in March 2011. The meeting decided to address the debilitating problem of illicit financial outflows from Africa estimated at about $50 billion (about FCFA) annually.

Barrister Akere Muna’s appointment is yet another honour for Cameroon for he was selected from a long list of Africans. He is also the Presiding Officer of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of African Union (ECOSOCC) and a member of the Eminent Persons Panel of the African Peer Review Mechanism.
