Electoral Process: European Union Makes Proposals

Prime Minister Philemon Yang March 1, discussed with Head of European Union Delegation.


The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Cameroon, Raul Mateus Paula yesterday, March 1, 2012 proposed that Cameroon should always publish a clear electoral calendar and also immediately publish election results per polling station to ensure transparency and credibility in the electoral process. He was speaking at the Prime Minister’s Office after giving suggestions from the European Union to the Prime Minister, Philemon Yang on ways of improving Cameroon’s electoral process.

Prime Minister Yang started consultations with political actors and development partners on Monday, February 27, 2012 to get their suggestions on better ways of compiling a unique and harmonised electoral law in Cameroon. The Head of the EU Delegation told the press that he suggested that different laws governing elections be harmonised to avoid confusion. He welcomed the decision to recompile the register of electors. He also proposed that political parties and the civil society election monitors be allowed in polling stations to enable them control results. The publication of a clear electoral calendar, Raul Mateus Paula said, will enable all actors better prepare themselves for the process. He disclosed that the Prime Minister requested that the European Union Delegation submits written proposals which he will do after consulting other ambassadors of the European Union member countries.
