Rainstorm Renders Buildings Roofless in Yaounde

Roofs of homes and schools were blown off due to storm over the weekend.

The rainy season is announcing itself. But the signals are not friendly to many families who are already gnashing their teeth in dismay over damages caused by heavy rains. Some families and school pupils in the Capital City are still to come to terms with their buildings whose roofs has been pulled up by tempest over the weekend in Yaounde.

Many say the signals of this year’s raining season is not pleasant with the huge material damages it is already causing. The heavy rains of Saturday March 10, 2012 took inhabitants aback, flooding downtown Yaounde and causing untold havoc to buildings, vehicle owners and pedestrians. From the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex to other areas like the Central Post Office junction and various neighborhoods like the Nsimeyong, Etoug-Ebe and Mendong, the scenes were similar with people grappling with flood waters as well as struggling to pick up zinc that have been uprooted by the hurricane.

Farmers are currently saluting the arrival of the rains but some people are lamenting saying “I wish there was no raining season”. As farmers are busy digging for better crop germination, some inhabitants in Yaounde are busy looking for means to re-build their roof which has been uprooted by tornado while others keep cleaning their homes and surroundings from debris brought around by the over flooding of near-by streams. At the Nkolbission neighbourhood in Yaounde, inhabitants witnessed a pathetic scene where the roof of a house was pulled up with the debris falling into the house. Eye witnesses say that was a scene that has not been witnessed in the neighbourhood for some time. It is said that occupants of the house were not around and only discovered the situation later.

At the Mendong neighbourhood in Yaounde, the roof of a private nursery and primary school was uprooted by the hurricane of Saturday March 11. Thank God it was a Saturday without school pupils in the school premises. If not, one would have being saying something else now given that the incident would have taken place on a school day with kids on campus resulting to other damages besides that affecting the school building. An inhabitant of Etoa neighbourhood in Yaounde explained how she had to spend over an hour the day after the storm trying to get rid of rubbish brought around her doorsteps by the hurricane. It is true the downpour came to salvage the dust that has been witnessed in the town for the past weeks. But this devil of a rain is causing nightmare to many households.
