Golden Jubilee of Reunification: Local Support Committee Begins Work

Preparatory activities were launched in Buea on March 17.

The Local Support Committee in charge of preparing for the 50th Anniversary of Cameroon’s Reunification met in the National Social Insurance Fund Conference Hall in Buea on Saturday March 17 for the official launch of preparatory activities. The event was chaired by the Grand Chancellor of the National Orders, Peter Mafany Musonge, who doubles as the Committee Chairperson.

Mr. Musonge explained that the meeting aimed at brainstorming on how to effectively participate in the upcoming historical event. Being the host region, he stressed, the Local Support Committee, regrouping all South West elite, has been set up to complement the efforts of the National Organising Committee. Consequently, it is incumbent on all local stakeholders to make suggestions and mobilise energy and resources for the success of the event that is expected to bring great honour to the region as a whole.

He asked for a minute of silence in memory of Hon. Ngale Adolf Namme, Member of Parliament for Buea Urban who died last month. In a bid to attain set objectives, three committees and ten subcommittees were formed, with well defined roles and responsibilities. Subcommittee meetings will continue in the days ahead ending with monthly reports, while the deadline for the submission of the draft budget is March 27. Proposals were equally made, regarding giving Buea a facelift.

A tentative date for the next Local Support Committee meeting was fixed for April 21 in Kumba, Meme Division during which there will be fundraising. Other regional headquarters shortlisted for the similar fundraising include Yaounde, Douala and Bamenda. Previously, members of the Regional Organizing Committee met in Buea on March 14 to assess the projects needed in view of the anniversary celebration. They commended work on the ongoing Kumba-Mamfe Road while the Loum-Kumba-Mundemba-Akwa Road, financed with aid from the African Development Bank, is due to begin this year.

On the other hand, rehabilitation of the FCFA 10 billion Reunification Hotel, Buea project is continuing as the workers are determined to respect their seven-month deadline.
