New Cricket Season Opens

The Season opened on Saturday March 17

The cricket season which went into recess since the month of August last, resumed last Saturday March 17 at the Lycéé Leclerc playground in Yaounde. In a press conference in prelude to the resumption of the season, the president of the Cameroon Cricket Federation, Victor Agbor-Nso, has disclosed that the new cricket season will begin on March 17 with a series of events including training seminars, cricket matches and capacity building for cricket coaches, umpires, curators and journalists. He equally said the cricket season is going to be very busy given that the federation has struck a partnership agreement with a British non-governmental organisation known as “Cricket without borders” which is going to offer equipment and training with the aim of using cricket to fight HIV/AIDs.

Victor Agbor-Nso equally disclosed that the federation has acquired a piece of land through the benevolence of the Yaounde Arch Diocese destined for the construction of the first ever solely cricket playing ground in Cameroon. The hurdle now according to the Fecacricket president, is raising funds to develop the land.

On the sporting side, he said Cameroon was preparing for the upcoming Division 3, World Cricket League in April 2012 in South Africa reserved for beginner nations or affiliate countries which will serve as qualifiers for the Cricket World Cup in 2013. He said cricket has gained enormous grounds in Cameroon ever since it was introduced in 2005 saying there are over 2000 practitioners and there will soon be the setting up of the female national cricket squad, U-15, U-17 and U-20 national teams.

On the administrative side, the federation obtained affiliation to the international cricket council, ICC, the setting up of an office and promotion of cricket in schools. Meanwhile, the federation on March 14 organised a cricket match between two academic institutions; LBA and Lycée Leclerc, to commemorate the Commonwealth week in Cameroon.
