The Diplomatic Road Ahead

President Sall’s government is expected to enjoy a lot of goodwill in the comity of nations.

Macky Sall’s government is not expected to face much challenges in the comity of nations, save for the situation in next door Mali and Guinea Bissau. Having won an election widely acclaimed as being free and fair by all sides – including the loser, Abdoulaye Wade - Sall is expected to continue to ride on the wings of such good will.

Consequently, solicitation for financial assistance for his country is not expected to be met with much difficulty. On the other hand, the new government’s stance on last week’s military takeover in its bigger neighbour, Mali, will be watched closely. Will Sall toe the line of his West African (ECOWAS) peers who are bent on seeing Captain Ahmadou Haya Sanogo-led junta return power to civilians without any further delay?

The situation is almost the same in neighbouring Guinea Bissau where first round presidential election results are being contested by the opposition. Even the runner up, former president Kumba Yala has said he will not go in for the runoff against former Prime Minister Carlos Gomez Junior.

Also on the sub-regional level, President Sall has to be more involved in fostering ECOWAS integration by ensuring that the single currency, Ecoi, becomes reality according to schedule. On the continental front, Africa will expect Macky Sall to play a frontline role like did Presidents Senghor, Diouf and Wade.
