ASEELEC Seek Order in the Electricity Sector

The National Bureau of the group of electricity companies met in Douala Tuesday.

The Association of Electricity and Water Companies (ASEELEC), a group of about 50 electricity companies, has resolved to instill order in the energy sector. Meeting for the first time on Tuesday, April 3, since its creation last year, the National Bureau appraised the problems plaguing the sector of electricity in the country and set up a plan of action to improve upon the situation, once implemented.

It blamed failures in the supply and distribution of energy to disorder, some indifference to consumers’ worries and a policy by which the existing power utility corporation pays much attention to the commercial department, while repairs, new and re-installations, service provision remain disturbingly slow.

The meeting, whose objectives were to put up a plan to instill order in the sector of electricity, also came up with a plan of action, including; effecting a sensitization tour of the regions, visit electricity companies like EDC, AES-Sonel, and ARSEL, as well as the official installation of the new executive bureau by the Minister of Energy and Water. All of these are expected to result to further exchanges that will afford some sanity in the sector, to Victor Ekang Esseng, ASEELEC National President.

They said although they do most of the work for the power utility corporation, AES Sonel, they are hardly efficient especially satisfying the demands of consumers. The General Manager of the Technical Union of Multiple Services, Tumetoh Azuni Emmanuel, expressed dissatisfaction owed to unnecessary delays in reinstalling power following blackouts. He said his company must wait for a service order from AES-Sonel to effect repairs or install electrical poles or change metres. “It is unnecessary for this process to be long. We are always very ready and available to do the job but we are bound to wait for a service order from AES-Sonel. And this takes long,” he told Cameroon Tribune.
