Easter Sunday This Weekend

The day will be marked in the country by church services and feasting in Christian homes.

The feast of Easter will be celebrated in Cameroon and the rest of the world on Sunday, April 8. After forty days of intense prayers and fasting, Christians are preparing both physically and spiritually for one of the most important feasts in the church. The day will be marked by church services and feasting in Christian homes.

Easter celebrations begin with the Holy Week after Palm Sunday. During Easter, several church ceremonies are organised such as baptisms, wedding, first Holy Communion, among others. Also during this period, insecurity looms as most people exaggerate their feasting by staying out late. As part of preparations for the feast, efforts are being made by the different institutions to ensure the safety of people during the celebration.

At the emergency ward of the Yaounde Central Hospital, measures have been put in place to give special care and attention to accident cases. When Cameroon Tribune reporters got to the ward yesterday, they found out that the atmosphere was calm and the wards and the entire premises were being cleaned up. The Service Head for Emergency Services, Dr. Etoundi Mballa, said the number of staff will be increased especially during night shift. He said during the feast, people take a lot of alcohol that usually results in road accidents and violence. Another problem is food poisoning. Dr. Etoundi Mballa appealed to the public to watch out for what they eat.

The National Gendarmerie is also preparing security measures during the event to ensure the safety of lives and property. Lt. Colonel Pierre Bomba Yene said during religious feasts, the gendarmerie steps up patrols. He said in Yaounde, patrol teams will be sent to the different neighbourhoods, especially in notorious areas. “The operation will be as from today, Holy Thursday and will end after the feast of the Easter to ensure that people are safe even after the feast,” he said. The patrol teams will work in collaboration with the proximity gendarme units in the different neighbourhoods.
