MTN Elite One: Renaissance Re-Awakes

They recorded a second successive victory on Saturday against title contender, Panthere.

Ever since the change at the technical bench of the club, Renaissance Ngoumou has been on an upward trend, recording two successive victories in the championship. After beating Unisport 2-14 on the 11th day of play of the MTN Elite One championship, the club from Ngoumou in the Centre Region, moved ahead to beat another heavyweight of the championship, Panthere of Nde on an identical 2-1 score. The victories have enabled the club to hop out of the relegation zone as before the change, Renaissance was unable to score even a goal in five days of play of the current championship.

With barely one day to go to the end of the first phase of the championship, rumours were rife of an eventual boycott of the championship by MTN Elite One and Elite Two club presidents, following the non disbursement of subventions promised by government. The nib the strike in the bud, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua, held a tripartite meeting on Friday March 30, 2012 regrouping representatives of the Professional League, MTN Elite One and Elite Two presidents and officials of his ministry during which he promised that a first instalment of 163 million will be disbursed to them in the month of April. Each elite one club is due to receive 30 millions and elite two clubs to receive 15 million as part of government’s support towards the establishment of a professional football league in Cameroon. The money is to enable club presidents offer handsome pay packages to players and coaches.
