African Champions League: Coton Sport Clinches 8th final Berth

They beat Dolphins 1-0 to sail through on away goal advantage after both sides were tied 2-2 on aggregate.

Coton Sport of Garoua has qualified for the 8th finals of the African champions’ league for an umpteenth time. After being humbled 1-2 in the away leg 16th final match at the Liberation stadium in Port Harcourt by local side, Dolphins, Coton Sport needed to score just one goal in the return leg on Sunday in Garoua without conceding any, to qualify for the next stage of the competition. And they did just that, narrowly edging the Dolphin of Nigeria 1-0, to qualify on away goal advantage after both sides were tied at 2-2.

Coton Sport therefore is the lone Cameroonian club surviving on the continental scene as Unisport who was representing Cameroon in the African Confederations Cup, were butted out of the competition by the Heartlands of Owerri-Nigeria. Unisport therefore absolutely needed a victory or kiss goodbye to the competition. However; things did not work out well for Unisport like Coton Sport as they were humbled 1-2 by Heartlands in their stronghold at the Dan Anyiam stadium in Owerri Nigeria. In the away leg match a fortnight ago at the Reunification stadium in Douala, both sides separated at a virgin draw.

The last time Coton sport came close to winning the prestigious continental trophy which also serves qualifier of club world cup, was in 2008, when they lost in the final to Al Ahly. Since then, the cotton weavers from Garoua have been fighting frantically without success to clinch their first continental trophy despite their domination of the domestic league.
