Private Education: Gov’t Subvention Under Scrutiny

A workshop to improve efficiency and coverage ends April 12, 2012 in Yaounde.

The Minister of Basic Education, Youssouf Hadidja Alim yesterday April 11 in Yaounde, urged actors in the private and public sectors of the education body to effectively come up with a mechanism which will not only put in place different means of assistance to private education but also through which government’s subvention to the sector is properly used. She was speaking while opening a two-day workshop which ends today on the validation of the Contract Teacher’s Employment Document between the State and the Private Education Sector.

The workshop, which is financed by the French debt relief C2D Education Programme, aims at stating the State’s Subvention Employment Guidelines and to reinforce the contribution of the private sector in achieving the National Educational Policy Objectives. Minister Youssouf Hadidja Alim said the event is one of government’s efforts to ease access to education and improve the quality of teaching.

The National Secretary for Catholic Education, Father Giles Ngwa Forteh on his part, outlined the importance of the meeting which he said ensures that Cameroonians are educated under good conditions with necessary support from the government. The National Secretary for Protestant Education, Reverend Henri Fomuso said they have been looking at different draft documents related to the situation of contract teachers. However, he expressed disappointment that they have been called to validate the document that they do not have enough time to study. He expected that a committee be set up to meet with the four National Secretaries of private education and critically study the document which is about to be validated. During the workshop, participants from all the private educational sectors of the country are looking for solutions through which the government will provide the funds needed to boost private education in the country.
