Fate of Magistrates Examined

President Paul Biya on Wednesday presided at the Higher Judicial Council of Cameroon.


The attention of the country’s judiciary was directed towards the Unity Palace yesterday, April 18 when members of the Higher Judicial Council of Cameroon met in an important session under the Chairmanship of the council President, the Head of State, Paul Biya.

The council members, ten of them including the Minister of State, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seal, Laurent Esso, President of the Administrative Bench of the Supreme Court, Clement Atangana as Rapporteur and Jean Foumane Akam, Technical Adviser at the Presidency, as council secretary, examined a number of issues that directly affect the life of the magistracy profession in the country. Other Substantive members who participated in the session were: Brigitte Mebande; Hubert Nkolo Menye ; Basile YagaÏ ; Frédéric Moche Fayeu; Lucy Asuagbor; and Albert Ekono Nna.

Talking to reporters at the end of the meeting, the Minister of State, Laurent Esso, pointed out inter alia that council members handled “disciplinary files of some magistrates, absorption into the magistracy of new professionals, promotion and transfers.” The council, he said equally examined the “file on clemency for a case of death sentence for which the council expressed its opinion.”

No details trickled out on the various files screened but from every indication, the council touched on serious areas, notably those concerned with discipline. “As you know, the council gives its opinion and the Head of State decides”, Laurent Esso concluded.
