Coton Sport of Garoua continues perpetrating her hegemony over the national football championship by resuming the top seat which they temporarily left to Union, thereby taking a good option to emerge symbolic away leg champion in the new look MTN Elite One, the embryonic professional league version. The colossus from the north walloped 5th placed Unisport 2-0 in a late day 10 encounter on April 18, 2012 at the Roumdé Adja stadium in Garoua. The victory propels the defending champions from the second to the first position with 23 points, one point ahead of runners up, Union with 22 points.
Coton Sport and Union will therefore be involved in a distant duel for the away leg title when they take on Njalla Quan and Panthere respectively on the 13th and last day of play of the first phase of the championship next Sunday. But for a dramatic turn of events, 3rd placed Panthere and 4th placed YOSA both on 20 points have been eliminated from the race for the away leg title. Even in the case of a victory for Panthere and YOSA, they can only meet up with Coton Sport but not above them.
However, the top match of the weekend is going to be indisputably the encounter between Union and Panthere who are fighting for the runner up position. The Unisport-YOSA encounter will also be of interest as the club from the North West region gun for their maiden qualification for continental competitions next year.
