Golden Jubilee of Reunification: Local Support Committee Raises FCFA 76 Million

The funds were raised during the second Steering Committee meeting in Kumba on Saturday.

Members of the local support committee for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Cameroon’s Reunification converged in the Meme Divisional Headquarters, Kumba, last Saturday April 21. Meeting at the Kumba City Council Banquet Hall, South West Elite both at home and abroad, in their different capacities were urged to complement the efforts of the National Organizing Committee through a fundraising exercise. The event was chaired by the Board Chair of the National Refinery Company (SONARA), John Ebong Ngolle, on behalf of the Grand Chancellor of the National Orders, Peter Mafany Musonge; the Committee Chairperson.

Even though the various stakeholders had been categorized and levied, they unanimously faced a target of CFA 150 million francs. As such, one after the other, from the chief launchers, through co-launchers to other benevolent contributors, the sum of CFA 76.110.000 francs was raised in both cash and pledges. The overall objective is to offer a befitting ceremony to the Head of State, President Paul Biya, who is
due to chair celebrations in Buea. Being the host region, it will be incumbent on the people to showcase not only their hospitality but other values peculiar to the South West. Given that the Reunification Golden Jubilee is a historic and grandiose event, the local stakeholders are bent on leaving no stone unturned in fulfilling their role. As such, a deadline for the collection of the total budget CFA 150 million francs was set for June 2012. Apart from the elite, the private sector is highly awaited to boost the efforts of the local stakeholders. The next steering committee meeting/fundraising is slated for June 02 in the Fako Divisional Headquarters, Limbe. Yaounde, Douala and Bamenda were equally shortlisted to host the fundraising exercise in the months ahead.

Prior to the fundraising, the local support committee held a brief working session in the Kumba City Council Conference hall. The aim was to evaluate the work of the 12 subcommittees with well defined roles and responsibilities. As such, the various subcommittees presented their action their plans, alongside a proposed budget to attain set objectives.
