War on Corruption: Muslim Leaders Pledge Continuous Support

The Chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday met with Imams in Yaounde.

In spite of the fact that Cameroon, according to the Chairman of the National Anti-corruption Commission (NACC), Rev. Dieudonné Massi Gams occupies the 134th position in the world in the fight against corruption, hopes are still high that the war will be won one day. A delegation of nine Imams in Yaounde yesterday May 3, 2012, held talks with Rev. Dieudonné Massi Gams on the effective implementation of the National Strategy to Fight Against Corruption in the country.

Cognizant of the fact that each Imam meets about 5,000 faithful per week and over 20,000 per month, NACC deemed it necessary to remind the Muslim religious leaders of the need to continue to sensitise the Muslim community on the vices of corruption. Dieudonné Massi Gams therefore challenged them not to relent efforts in denouncing corrupting in society so as to ameliorate the fight against the ill. Integrity, NACC Chairman pointed out, remains a virtue society needs to embrace. The message can better go through if Muslim leaders take the crusade further, he emphasised

The Muslim leaders led by the Grand Imam of Yaounde, Cheick Malam Abraham Moussa, pledged continuous support to the National Anti-corruption Commission in the realisation of its noble mission to curb corruption. “We intend to fight corruption as we have been doing and to implement all recommendations we took with NACC,” said one of the Imams, El Hadj Oumarou Djibring. They reassured NACC that they will strengthen the fight not only in their Friday gathering, but also in schools.

Yesterday’s meeting came on the heels of a similar one that held on May 12, 2011 where both parties agreed to work in synergy. It is part of the sector-based activities of the Commission and falls in line with measures taken to ensure the implementation of the National Strategy to Fight Against Corruption.
