2012 University Games: Champions Begin To Emerge

Four institutions are still to win a medal.

The 2012 All-Cameroon University Games enter day six today Thursday May 10, 2012 with the Higher Institute of Youth and Sports (INJS) maintaining its lead on the medal chart medal. As of yesterday morning, INJS was leading with 10 gold, 11 silver and six bronze, giving a total of 27 medals.

Their immediate challenger remained the University of Dschang with 17 medals, including six gold. They were followed in the third position by the University of Yaounde II with 21 medals among which are five gold. The Catholic University of Central Africa, alongside four other institutions such as the National Polytechnic, Bambui, IUCSt-J, IAI and ENSPT, are still to win a medal. The host, the University of Buea, has one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, giving a total of five.

The Buea games are gaining momentum with mobile units stationed around playgrounds to attend to cases of injury. The University of Buea, UB Health Unit headed by Dr. Patrick Weledji, has already evacuated four injured athletes to the Regional Hospital annex, Buea for ex-ray because of fractures. Asthma cases are equally being handled. Most of them are girls from fan clubs that extend their activities late into the cold Buea night. A snake equally bit a University of Ngaoundere student and the situation was immediately arrested. Given the growing incidents of injury, the medical team has advised athletes to sleep and eat well and drink enough water to sustain their resistance.

Yesterday May 9, 2012 was a calm day in the UB campus as competitions went on peacefully with the athletes concentrating fully in their games. Various delegations have erected stands around the campus and are selling their institutions to the general public, especially students. They distribute leaflets to introduce the learning opportunities they offer The HIV/AIDS campaign is also being intensified. Business on the other hand continues to boom in the area as traders take advantage of the games. Apart from official food services, meals are sufficiently sold in makeshift restaurants in Molyko as many visitors are often seen munching even in the open air.

According to the games newsletter, today’s fixtures include athletics 400-m finals men and women, football semi-finals for men and women, handball quarter finals, table tennis finals and lawn tennis semi-finals and volleyball men’s semi-finals.
