African Champions League: Coton Sport Vies for Group Stage Spot

They need to score without conceding to qualify when they receive Berekum Chelsea this weekend.

After accomplishing the exploit of a virgin draw against Berekum Chelsea in Ghana, Cameroon’s lone flag bearer in the prestigious African champion’s league, Coton Sport is confident about clinching a place in the mini-league phase with a guaranteed 400.000 dollars, that is, about FCFA202.2 million prize money, up for grab. “I’m very confident we will beat them in the second leg. I believe we can qualify to the group stage,” said the French coach of Coton Sport Garoua, Robert Boivin.

Though expressing confidence, Coton Sport has to remain cautious mindful of the fact that they have to score without conceding to sail through to the group stage and they will be playing against a side that scored ten goals in two matches, firing five goals against three-time continental champions, Raja Casablanca of Morocco. To boost the morale of the players, Berekum Chelsea of Ghana have been called upon to follow the example set by their English namesakes when they try to undo the damage caused by Coton Sport a fortnight ago.

Berekum coach Hans van der Pluijm has told his players to learn from the Barcelona-Chelsea epic last month during which a 10-men Chelsea side was able to cover up a two-goal deficit and clawed back to draw 2-2 and clinch a place in the May 19 final against Bayern Munich. "This tie is far from over. Nothing is impossible in football, look what Chelsea achieved in Barcelona against all odds," said Netherlands-born, Van der Pluijm. "Obviously, the best chance of victory usually comes at home, but we have to concentrate on the second leg in Cameroon and make sure we progress to bring pride to Ghana. The result hinges on the commitment and determination of my players and they normally deliver when pushed. Football is unpredictable and nothing is impossible," added the 63-year-old coach. Coton Sport were losing finalists in 2007, which serves their best output in the premier continental club championships.
