The National Fire Brigade is organising a nationwide campaign to sensitise the public on the prevention of fire disasters in markets. The campaign which will last three days is in line with activities to mark the 2012 National Day celebrations in Cameroon.
In Yaounde, the Mfoundi, Mokolo and Yaounde Central markets were chosen for the operation that began on Wednesday May 9, 2012. The same operation is taking place in Douala and Garoua. During the campaign, the fire service will carry out demonstrations of basic first aid and rescue techniques, give safety instructions and point out better ways of securing lives and property. It is also to enable the public understand that the service is there for them.
According to Dr. Major. Francis Ekosso, the initiative of the high command of the National Fire Brigade is to train civilians on the importance of guarding against fire outbreaks. “Through this, we want to get better cooperation from all stakeholders, including the common man. We want to know what people think of us so that we can find better ways of serving them,” he explained. Major Ekosso said the public is interested and anxious to know why they are on the field. He explained that it is likely that the target next year will be offices.
The National Fire Brigade is the only branch of the military that is of direct total service to civilians, the army officer pointed out. However, many people do not seem to know about the role played by the service. The campaign this year is therefore intended to let the public discover the fire service. The National Fire Brigade deals with general rescue and first aid to people in distress.
