The school has been described as one of the best in the country.

The silver jubilee of Government High School (GHS) Buea, popularly known as GHS Bokwaongo, the second Government Secondary School in the South West Regional capital after Bilingual Grammar School, Molyko, was celebrated last May 18. On the occasion, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Secondary Education, Professor Tambo Leke, urged GHS Buea to keep its flame as one of the best schools in Cameroon - academically and morally.

The flag of the school that was founded in 1987 flew high in the headquarters of the South West Region in the days leading to its silver jubilee. Ex-students from the Diaspora joined efforts with those in the country to commemorate the event in pomp and pageantry.

To end the event, the graduation of Form Five and Upper Sixth students was organised and prizes offered to outstanding students. The Principal, Hannah Etonde Mbua, addressed the guests and students, retracing the school’s history from its modest beginning till date. Morally, she highlighted the fact that GHS Buea, though a secular institution, has produced three priests, namely Reverend Fathers Wilfred Epie, Felix Nkafu and John Esua.

She explained that it is not the name of an institution that counts, but the people who make it. The buzzwords speak for themselves: “Reap only what you sow” and the motto, “Work Discipline Success,” have propelled GHS Buea students to shine in GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations. The Principal praised the Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) headed by Mbua Evelle Kool, a journalist, for offering three science laboratories to the school for Biology-Chemistry, Food Science, Physics and Geology.

Equally, the PTA has assisted in the construction of two computer halls, extension the library and school hall, purchase of a school bus, building of a school fence and hired part time teachers. The various speakers expressed hope to begin the journey to the next golden jubilee with expectations for more achievements.
