Holidays As Time Of Headache For Parents

Even though holidays are meant for relaxation, parents still keep their children busy.

Holidays are once more around the corner. In less than a week, schools in Cameroon will officially go on vacation. Presently, school campuses are deserted and only school officials are busy preparing report cards which will be handed over tomorrow Friday June 8.

Vacation is usually a period for relaxation for children across the country. Even though holiday period is usually a period for relaxation for children, it is also a time of worry for many parents. Early this week, holiday job seekers were seen in public and private enterprises in Yaounde either working or anxiously looking for their names on notice boards to see if they were retained for holiday jobs.

Vanessa Elemva, a student of ISTAG in Quartier Fouda- Yaounde said she has been is on internship for the past two months in the Ministry of Transport. She said the training is important as it will help her improve her skills in road safety. During this period, some parents worry about how to keep their children busy with others preferring to get holiday jobs for their children rather than keeping them at home. Martin M. is a taxi cab driver in Yaounde and a father of six children. He said the first two children are already on internship in two different enterprises in Douala. He explained that he has a relative in Douala and so the children live with the relative. He said the younger children will spend holidays with their grand mother in Mbanga in the Littoral Region.

Armstrong Awenti, a civil servant said his children are still young and so cannot work. He said he is looking for money to send them to some recreational centres so that they can relax after working hard in school. Another civil servant, Jeremy Okounou, said he will send his children to their grandmother in Egona in the Mbam and Kim Division of the Centre Region so that they should learn how to speak the mother tongue.
