Mangroves Preservation Preoccupies

University of Douala signed a partnership to conserve them during the 40th edition of the Environmental Day.

The University of Douala has signed a partnership with the Network for Preserving Mangroves, RCM, to plant and preserve mangroves in the Littoral. During the ceremony, the National Coordinator for RCM Dr Gordon Ajionina said that the destruction of mangroves in Cameroon has gone too far because the population use it for livelihood, to smoking of fish among other things. He also added that government has signed so many conventions on the preservation of Mangroves. According to experts from the Delegation of Environment Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development, government is trying to ameliorate the situation by providing alternatives to the people to stop them from using mangroves, such as using wood burners, build solar energy and above all try to regenerate the degraded areas.

According to the Rector of the University of Douala, Bruno Bekolo Ebe, Mangrove is very important to the ecosystem and global warming to keep a stable climate and the production of carbon. He added that Mangroves plays a role against climate change, preserves soil and biodiversity. Thanks to the president of the Republic, he said who created the Institution of Fishery in Yabassi who have been in charge of planting the mangroves at Bois de singes, Douala. He said the mangroves have to be planted in 7000 square metres which makes seven hectares at bois de singes. He said the students have already planted five hectares of mangroves. He called on the entire community to work in collaboration.

The Littoral Governor, Joseph Beti Assomo under whose patronage the partnership was signed, said it is necessity for the community to work together to preserve Carbon. He added that green economy is for sustainable development to protect biodiversity.
