The Secretary of State in the Ministry of Public Health presided over the event on Tuesday.
The population of the South West has been urged to uphold health habits that keep the cholera epidemic at bay. The call was made on Tuesday 5th June at the Bongo’s Square ceremonial ground Buea by the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Public Health in charge of Epidemics and Pandemics, Alim Hayatou. He was officially launching the National Sensitisation Campaign Against Cholera in the Region.
Alim Hayatou explained that from January 1 to May 31, 2012, seven cholera cases have been recorded, with no deaths. This, he described as encouraging compared to the 3446 cases registered against 46 deaths (1, 33% death rate) between 2010 and 2011.
On behalf of the government, Alim Hayatou expressed satisfaction with the population, which within a year could contain the spread of the disease. This, according to him, was clear proof that all the messages and efforts put in place by the government, were fully respected. However, he added, the work is continuous, given that the fundamental living habits are the same, thus making the resurgence of cholera impending. While lauding local, national and international partners in the fight against cholera, his end note recommended the population to foster preventive measures like the constant washing of hands with soap and water; drinking of potable water as well as the proper use of latrines, among others. It would be recalled that the first cholera case was announced in Mile 16, Bolifamba on November 14, 2010. It later affected other areas with Limbe, the Fako Divisional headquarters being most hit.
Prior to the official launch, the Secretary of State held a working session with the Regional Committee for the Fight against Cholera. It consisted of a report of the committee’s activities up till date, brainstorming on prompt and effective measures in case of an outbreak, and effective communication with the populace. The high mark of the ceremony was the handing over of sensitisation tools to the Chairperson of the Regional Committee against cholera. A visitation of stands exhibiting hand washing, water purification, communication and logistics, amongst other animations also spiced the day.
