Within the framework of the TUNZA/Plant for the Planet initiative, and the Child Earth Institute, The Little Angels of the Environment Cameroon (LANEC), last June 5, 2012 at the St Joseph’s Primary School Mvog-ada, carried out sensitisation talks in line with this year`s theme for the World Environment Day `”Green Economy does it concern you?” `
Talking to his peers in the presence of a delegation of LANEC officials, Ngwa Valentine Akoufei, the group’s young African Ambassador, threw more light on the different ways in which the concept of a Green Economy could impact the lives of the pupils and peers who turned out for the event and listened to him with a lot of anxiety.
The event that was part of LANEC`s contribution towards activities to mark the 2012 World Environment Day Celebrations, came at a time when more than half of the world’s population now live on natural resources. As demand for food, water, and energy rises, educating children at an earlier stage on the importance of protecting the environment and sustainable lifestyles, falls in line with the TUNZA programme for Children and Youth and the vision of Child Earth Institute to which LANEC partners to carry out such initiatives.
The activities were equally characterised by sensitisation talks on the importance of tree planting and other environmentally-friendly habits, amongst other things. The event ended with a tree planting exercise adding 300 trees to the 4,000 trees that the children had already planted in the South and South West Regions of Cameroon since 2008 as disclosed by Feh Galega the Youth spokesperson. This gesture was highly appreciated by the Parish Priest of the St Josephs Anglophone Parish Rev Father Andre Nzibi, who encouraged the children and thanked them for choosing Mvog- Ada as this year’s venue.
In an educative talk on this years theme “Green Economy does it concern you?” the LANEC Legal Adviser, Feka Christopher, cautioned the children on their implications and commitments on environmental concerns at an earlier stage indicating to the children and youth that it is not good enough to plant but more importantly to from time to time to care for and maintain the ornamental plants, for the future.
It should be noted that LANEC, has been carrying out educative and sensitisation activities on various environmental issues for the past years. The Head Catechist of the Parish, Mr Morfaw, on his part welcomed and encouraged the children reminding them that a healthy environment is a Godly environment.
LANEC equally used the opportunity to send out messages to other children through the media on what it means to be environmental friendly as well as other messages related to the day. The event was organised under the supervision of the LANEC Projects Manager, Ita Ndifon and the National Coordinator, Priscilla Song.
