CEMAC: Embracing Speedy ICT Dev’t

Improvement in the sector still needs the mobilization of all actors to a spirit of partnership, trust and teamwork.

Civil society organizations on the Internet Governance have appraised the slow-paced development of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Central Africa. In a Declaration made in Douala over the week-end, they raised issues relating to the identification of inertia and the mobilization of all actors to a spirit of partnership, trust and teamwork as still insufficient.

It considered “the delay in the development of ICT in our sub-region compared to other African sub-regions and in the implementation of recommendations made in forums held in Ghana, Egypt, and Kenya, as well as the role and place of ICT in promoting Agenda 21, Rio +20 and the Green Business and Green Economy.”

Cognizant of this, the organisations encourage each member country to implement decisions taken in their respective countries, collect and circulate information on the principles, the actors and the vision of internet governance among all stakeholders, initiate an advocacy campaign challenging the major players such as NEPAD, ECCAS, CEMAC, COPTAC, ECA, ITU, UNESCO, States, and technical and financial partners on the need to establish an enabling environment for ICT development in Central Africa. The goal will be to establish through an inclusive dialogue an ICT linking the various segments of our economies to serve citizens and their development priorities.
